Some random cartoons trying to make a point
UK states “licensing for oil and gas not inherently incompatible with climate objectives”, suggests “checkpoint” to confirm.
Fails to mention: it gave away authority to license to an organisation (the OGA) it then legally obliged to maximise oil and gas extraction, not income. |
"We’re standing in a rising flood, with big lead weights around our ankles.
There are two other people there: one is standing near us, selling lead ankle-weights, and another, who sells life-jackets and hacksaws, sits in a boat.
We have been dealing with the person selling ankle-weights for many years, and he's now offering different ankle-weights, painted to look like life-jackets, and we’ve been buying them.
But with the water rising further and further, isn’t it time to turn around, to the person with the life-jackets and the boat, and hear what she has to say?"

And once again, 2022, the UK government agrees to additional oil licenses. No change, or are people slowly waking up?
Made following the IPCC report in 2015, but equally valid in 2022as the recent (leaked) IPCC report which is frightening to read, made it to the front pages for a day before amuse-news took over once again.
This is technically correct, both as theory and as depiction of our current corporate-controlled western society.
Still in 2022, the oil industry thinks a rapid transition would be too upsetting. And since they still hold all the lobbying power, the government agrees - unless more people start protesting louder.
Distractors make more money than activists. And while limited-cause activists can often find funding, global-issue activists often lack the target-focus to fund themselves.
The discovery of dark spin is over a century old, responsible for millions of painful deaths, but clever refinements and social media make it more far more effective, and "incumbent wealth" (and the fossil fuel industry) are benefitting.
Activists don't want to be activists: they also just want to lead a good, enjoyable life. But when you realise your home and livelihood are being destroyed, you have to act. Oh, to live in a world that doesn't need protecting from destruction...
